Embroidery With Fringe

Embroidery with fringe can be a wonderful addition to purses, pillows and more.embroidery with fringe It is easy to make and adds a beautiful touch of texture to your embroidery. The basic structure of machine embroidery with fringe is created with a wide satin stitch of up to about 10 mm, which is then anchored on one side with either a running or satin stitch. Then, after the embroidery is finished, it is turned right side up and the bobbin threads are cut close to the anchor stitches, leaving the fringe portions free of the fabric. This creates a loopy, fuzzy type of fringe.

Another way to create fringe in embroidery is with a picot stitch.embroidery with fringe This is a great stitch for creating dimensional flowers, feathers and leaves in your embroidery. A picot stitch is similar to a satin stitch in that the base of it is anchored, but the rest of the stitch is woven and free from the fabric, creating a very soft fringe.

To use the picot stitch to create fringe, first hoop your fabric and add a layer of cutaway stabilizer to the back.embroidery with fringe Next, stitch the design on your embroidery machine with a zigzag or satin stitch foot, following the color change chart for the design you are using. After the design is stitched, remove the hoop and clip the black bobbin threads with a pair of sharp scissors or seam ripper, being careful not to break the embroidered stitches.

If you are going to be making a loopy, fuzzy fringe, the best thread to use is rayon embroidery thread in a shade that blends well with your fabric. It will also help if you use a tweezer or blunt, pointy tool to lift the satin stitches and fluff them up. Depending on the size of your fabric, you may want to make each fringe portion between 2 and 3 inches (5 and 8 cm) long.

For a more structured, or twisted, fringe, you can use a hemmstitch. This stitch is used to hem or edge garments like tablecloths, runners, napkins, coasters and mats. It is stitched in a single row and is done with all three layers of the fabric. The hemmstitch is made with a very wide satin stitch, which is then anchored with a narrower running or satin stitch. When the embroidery is completed, turn it over and carefully cut through each fringe satin column (the edge opposite the tackdown satin) with a small pair of scissors or a seam ripper. Then, turn the embroidery back to the right side and fluff up each fringe section.

You can even use a combination of fringe techniques in your designs, such as a twisted, textured flower with some loopy fringe to create the petals. Just be sure to change the bobbin thread to a water-soluble one for any steps that call for fringe, and remember to switch it back to normal bobbin thread when you finish embroidering!
